I know it is hard to believe, but spring really is right around the corner. And once it comes, you are going to want to head outside, right? This is the perfect time to get some impactful spring cleaning done before you come down with Spring Fever.
- Clean Out the Kids’ Closets
This is generally the time of year that consignment shops are accepting spring and summer clothing. Go through the kid’s clothes to see what doesn’t fit and separate that pile into consignment, donate, give to a friend/family member. Then put these bags in your car and schedule these errands on your calendar. Who knows, you might make some money.
- Clean Out Your Closet
If you don’t feel like doing a complete and thorough clean out, just try on your spring and summer clothes. Do they still fit? Are they in good condition (no stains or tears)? Do you like how you look in them? If you answered “no” to any of these questions, remove the item from your closet. Also check your shoes and bags. Donate or consign the items you no longer want or need.
- Vacuum Refrigerator Coils
Have you vacuumed your refrigerator coils yet this year? This is something we do every year. And by “we” I mean my husband who is so good at this particular task. It is a pain but it prolongs the life of the refrigerator and helps it run smoothly.
- Wipe Baseboards and Window Sills
Are your baseboards and window sills fuzzy? I know you have to bend over pretty far to see the baseboards, but how do they look? Even if they get vacuumed every now and then, nothing beats a damp wipe with a rag.
- De-Germ Light Switches, Door Handles, and Remotes
Imagine how germy the light switches and door handles are, not to mention the remotes! This is a job for Lysol/Clorox wipes. Grab the container and head around the house to get all of these offenders. Don’t forget the outside door handles, which are probably the dirtiest, and the refrigerator, oven, and microwave handles, too.
- Vacuum House Vents
Have you ever noticed fur growing out of the vents in your house? Grab a portable vacuum and step stool and suck out the dirt in both the intakes and outflows.
- Wash Window Screens
If your screens seem gunky or dirty, take them out of the windows and put them in the shower. Spray them with cleaner and use a cleaning brush or rag to lightly scrub them down. Rinse with the shower head and dry in the shower stall. Easy, right?
- Clean Comforters & Bedding
When is the last time you cleaned the comforters or duvets in the house? Now is a good time. Also, did you know you that bed sheets and bath towels should be washed in hot water? It kills the dust mites!
- Pillows/Stuffed Animals/Stuffed Dog Toys
If you can’t wash your throw pillows or stuffed animals, you can kill dust mites by tossing them in the dryer on the high heat setting for 10 minutes. Make sure the stuffed animals can take the heat. If they are delicate, you might want to use a hand held vacuum. Throw stuffed dog toys in the washer on the hot setting. If you only have a few toys, put some rags or towels in with them. Tumble dry and they will be very clean!
I bet your sofa has gotten lots of use this winter. Take all of the cushions off and vacuum underneath. Also vacuum the cushions, the top and outside of the sofa. If you can, move the sofa and vacuum under it. Who knows what you might find!
